Where is the ₹30,000 Crore Monthly SIP Surge Actually Flowing?

Indian investors poured a massive ₹32,297 crore into mutual funds through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) in August 2026 alone. Driven by 10.02 crore active SIP accounts, this surge represents a profound shift in Indian retail wealth.

With 28.35 crore total mutual fund accounts nationwide, nearly 35% of all mutual fund accounts now utilize SIPs. This highlights both an incredible adoption rate and a massive runway for future market penetration.

The Big Picture: Overwhelming Equity Dominance

While total SIP inflows grew by 14% over the last year, the number of accounts grew by 11.5%. This indicates that the average SIP ticket size is expanding rapidly, currently sitting at ₹3,052.

When we break down where this massive pool of capital is going, equity remains the undisputed king:

Asset Category Monthly SIP Inflow (₹ Crore)
Equity Schemes ₹26,145
Hybrid Schemes ₹2,085
Index Schemes ₹1,564
Debt Schemes ₹560

Under the Hood: Where the Equity & Hybrid Money Goes

Investors are showing a distinct appetite for growth, aggressively leaning into mid and small-cap segments:

  • Small Cap Schemes: Led the charge with ₹5,012 crore
  • Mid Cap Schemes: Followed closely at ₹4,254 crore
  • Flexi Cap Schemes: Maintained strong momentum at ₹4,106 crore
  • Thematic Funds: Captured ₹2,723 crore
  • Large & Mid Cap Funds: Secured ₹2,328 crore

Within the hybrid category, Multi-Asset Allocation schemes emerged as the preferred choice at ₹882 crore. This was followed by Aggressive Hybrid funds (₹505 crore) and Dynamic Asset Allocation/Balanced Advantage funds (₹492 crore). Additionally, Fund of Funds (FoFs) pulled in ₹1,459 crore, a significant portion of which likely routes into gold and silver ETFs.

The Surprise Twist: The High-Ticket Debt SIP Trend

While debt funds capture a smaller slice of total volume, they boast the highest average ticket sizes per account. Sophisticated investors are deploying highly tactical asset allocation strategies here:

  • Money Market Funds (₹126 Crore Total Flow): Holds the highest average SIP size at ₹16,317. Investors are effectively using these as recurring Fixed Deposits. By investing in short-term Certificates of Deposit (CDs) and Commercial Papers (CPs) maturing under a year, they capture higher yields than standard savings products with superior liquidity and no premature withdrawal penalties.
  • Arbitrage Funds (₹110 Crore Total Flow): Holds the second-highest average SIP size at ₹10,439. Investors choose this route for short-term parking to leverage highly favorable equity taxation, avoiding the maximum marginal tax rates applied to standard debt funds.
  • Liquid & Ultra-Short Duration Funds: Saw above-average ticket sizes. Smart investors use these to park fresh salary inflows, earning yields double that of a traditional savings account until monthly EMIs or primary expenses are due.

Strategic Takeaway: Building a Resilient Portfolio

SIPs are far more than just a tool for equity investing. They are a powerful mechanism to average out costs, navigate inevitable annual market corrections, and systematically build a diversified portfolio. Expanding your monthly SIPs beyond equity into debt and gold provides the structural balance required for long-term wealth preservation.
